Smart Nation is not just a slogan. It is a rallying idea for us all to work together, to transform our future together. ― Lee Hsien Loong

Internet plays a huge role in the lives of politicians. It helps politicians connect with the rest of the population more and in a way present them in a light that says, “I’m just like you guys. I take selfies, instagram my meals and use hashtags.

But that is not all. In fact, politicians are much more in touch with the knowledge of internet than the majority of us. They learn the things we do with the internet in order to communicate and relate to us, and more importantly understand the power of the internet, keep in touch with its future development and weigh the benefits and costs, in order to make important decisions for their nations. A perfect example would be the Smart Nation plan that the Singapore government has in mind for Singapore. The government wishes to make Singapore the world’s first smart nation, where internet access all around the island is only a tip of the iceberg. The experts in the following video will take you through the concept.

Sounds cool right? Well, our nation certainly would not be enjoying this and reaping its advantages in the near future if our politicians had not made such decisions for us. Here is a video of our Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's speech at the launch of the Smart Nation initiative. Though it is a rather long video, I think it contains very detailed useful intel about the upcoming projects that Singapore is embarking on, its challenges, such as cyber security, and it gives us a peek into our future as well. It basically also explains to you what you just saw in the previous few videos.

So apart from just the usual stuff that we do with the internet, I feel that politicians have a much closer relationship with it as they have the nation's dreams and future of having it rest in their hands. Since the internet has also made life more efficient for people, it also benefits the economy; thus, its advancement to create greater efficiency is even more of a concern for politicians. They would have to make decisions to fund research and engineers to make such visions possible, as seen by the example of the National Infocomm Awards.
Anyway, I am really excited about Smart Nation and am ready to embark on it, are you?
