Week 4: Doing Business
Creativity takes courage. ― Henri Matisse
This week, we learn about doing business on the internet. This made me think of
Threadless, a company that exists only because the internet exists.
In 2000, the company started out as a t-shirt selling business online and has since expanded to include more products such as jackets, sweaters, men's shirts, wall canvases, iPhone covers, and toddler garments.
From their message above, you would probably have noticed one of the reasons behind their success:
Power Shift (Which we had learnt in Week 2). Power shift is not only seen in media generation but in this case, we notice it in business! With the help of the internet, they have managed to place the control of their production in the hands of the consumers. Budding artists amongst the consumers get to submit their designs and obtain feedback from other consumers through comments and ratings. It also connects people with others of similar artistic appreciation. A brilliant business idea and a smart usage of internet to their advantage.
While they do have a physical location (as shown above), their physical location if more of their office and warehouse, and a means to facilitate item collection, which helps to cut down on unnecessary transportation costs. However, should any customer wish to place order or visit the warehouse, customers seem to still go through a similar experience as they would online. The only exception: It is as though they have a
holographic experience because they are able to see and touch the physical items at the warehouse, which they are currently unable to with the given state of mass technology.
With the help of some of the current internet tools, they have also made online shopping easier for their customers by providing them with sizing charts and a simple video tutorial (below) on how to take measurement in order to lower the chance of purchasing a garment that does not fit the customer.
After learning so much of how they run their business online, let me share with you some of the creative designs that have been chosen by their customers to be printed for sale.
The next two images feature one of my favourite designs because of its unique
UV technology on its design. This is what one sees when the shirt is under normal lighting indoors.
This is what one sees when the shirt is exposed to sunlight when outdoors!
Cool huh? Here's the link to Threadless if you are interested to find out more about them or grab some of these awesome designs!
So let your creativity flow~ While there may be business models that are beneficial for your road to success in business, having the ability to innovate based on the unique characteristics that the internet provides, such as power shift, could very well be your golden ticket to a successful business.
Cheers! (:

My Virtual Thought Bubble
Guten Tag!
Happiness is not the absence of problems, it's the ability to deal with them. ― Steve Maraboli
HELLO!
Welcome to my COM 125 blog.
COM 125 is a module where I learn things about the internet that I had not known about and this is the little space where I share things about the internet that I learn beyond the classroom through the internet.
The quote above is a good overall learning take from the internet. The internet was invented to solve problems that existed back then and has ever since been continuously innovated to tackle more problems. As a result, it has undoubtedly brought about great ease and happiness to us.
I hope you will enjoy reading my posts and be enlightened just as I had been (:
