Week 2: A Communication Media - Impacts & Strategy (I)
You must be the change you wish to see in the world. ― Mahatma Gandhi
Mr Choy's question of the week is
"Do you feel the power shift?"
This week we learnt all about the power that the internet puts in the hands of the consumer in social media.
We often hear complaints. Either complaints by others or sometimes even we are guilty of making them. Since social media came about, we also tend to put our complains out on the internet via the various social media platforms, seemingly to be expecting others to address them. This is an example of power in the hands or the consumers, which to me does not sound like justice is done to this incredible power shift.
Thankfully, there are consumers who have responsibly utilised this power that has been bestowed upon them.
The non-profit organisation,
StandUpFor.SG, is an one that has benefitted from the internet through social media. The team of friends set up this organisation in 2012 hoping to rally fellow citizens who share a similar dream, that is to make Singapore a better place for all.
Whilst you might already be thinking that their dream is "all talk", let me rest assure you that they are certainly not. Since their establishment till today, they have already had 4 bigger-scaled movements that were all featured in the mass media and 1 smaller-scaled project.
Their projects would not have been possible or would have been extremely challenging if social media was not invented. The team reacts to social problems that arise and tries to address them as soon as it surfaces. For example within a week or two from the time the problem arises, their event for tackling the issue would take place. That is how fast their turn over is, which pretty much explains how crucial is the role that social media plays. The power that social media provided allowed them to have the support of a significant amount of participants for their events.
During and after the event, social media allowed them even more publicity through photos, posts, shares and especially
#hashtags.
This sharing was necessary to reach out to people who were touched by the idea, but were either unable to be a part of the movement or were a little skeptical about it being "all talk".
I was proud to have been a participant of two of their events so far. Here is a video of how one of the events went!
If you too are inspired by what they do and would like to know more about the organisation and their past events, you can check out their Facebook page via the link at the end of this post. Like their Facebook page if you would love to follow them and be part of the next event! (:
Go spread some love, ciao!

My Virtual Thought Bubble
Guten Tag!
Happiness is not the absence of problems, it's the ability to deal with them. ― Steve Maraboli
HELLO!
Welcome to my COM 125 blog.
COM 125 is a module where I learn things about the internet that I had not known about and this is the little space where I share things about the internet that I learn beyond the classroom through the internet.
The quote above is a good overall learning take from the internet. The internet was invented to solve problems that existed back then and has ever since been continuously innovated to tackle more problems. As a result, it has undoubtedly brought about great ease and happiness to us.
I hope you will enjoy reading my posts and be enlightened just as I had been (:
